What is C-ITS?
Connected with the future
C-ITS stands for Co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems – it enables the exchange of information between vehicles and infrastructure. Suitably equipped vehicles can communicate with each other (V2V) and with the infrastructure (V2I). This uses the IEEE 802.11p radio standard developed for road traffic, which allows real-time information exchange over distances of 500 to 800 meters. Across Europe, more than 2.4 million vehicles are already equipped with C-ITS technology.

Traffic control centers also benefit from this information and can manage traffic more quickly and accurately.

Short-term roadworks on motorways and expressways count as a major risk in traffic. C-ITS roadworks warning systems are expected to become mandatory on German motorways in 2026, a first in Europe. For the protection of construction sites, C-ITS units will then be required to warn approaching vehicles in the surrounding area in real time. This ensures that drivers are informed of the hazard in advance and can adjust their driving accordingly.
